These tests are common in cases of suspected DWI and are frequently employed in the state of Texas. Texas court systems take DWI charges very seriously, and, if convicted, a person charged with DWI could face legal consequences as serious as huge monetary fines and even jail time.

3 Types of Field Sobriety Tests

There are three very common types of field sobriety tests that could be administered to a person suspected of DWI. These tests, and a brief explanation of each, are:

  • Vision exam. Commonly, an officer asks a person to move his or her eyes around while the officers observe the eyes’ movements.
  • Balance exam. A person is asked to walk a straight line, or balance on one foot, etc.
  • Memory exam. A person is asked to recite a commonly known fact, such as the alphabet (or the alphabet backwards)

These are very common field sobriety tests and are often used in conjunction with such tests as a breathalyzer or blood sample.
