License Suspension and Moving States

Many states have administrative license revocation (ALR) policies that allow law enforcement officials to confiscate your driver’s license if you are driving while intoxicated or if you refuse to provide a blood alcohol concentration sample when suspected of drunk driving. This suspension can last from 60 days up to 2 years. In some cases, you may have to move states while your license is still suspended.

Often, your new home state can uphold your license revocation. Thus, it can be helpful to avoid any suspension whatsoever. If your license has been suspended for drunk driving, we may be able to help. To discuss your case, contact an experienced Houston license suspension lawyer from Johnson, Johnson & Baer, P.C., today at 713-222-0400.

The DLC and NRVC

The Driver’s License Compact (DLC) and Nonresident Violator Compact (NRVC) are two interstate agreements that attempt to open communication channels between member states in order to share information regarding driver’s license suspensions, moving violations, and other offenses. Most states are members of one or both organizations, while Michigan and Wisconsin are not members of either agreement.

What Does This Mean for Suspended Licenses?

States that belong to the DLC are generally under agreement that any licenses suspended in one member state are still suspended in other member states. If you move and attempt to apply for a license in your new state, your history will be provided through the DLC and you may not be able to regain a driver’s license.
