Suspected drunk driver arrested for traveling wrong-way, causes crash

This morning around 4 a.m. a suspected drunk driver was traveling near downtown Houston on the wrong side of the road. This mistake caused a collision on North Shepherd Road.
The accident happened close to the Katy Freeway and the driver of the struck vehicle was injured. The woman received neck and back injuries in the crash and was taken to a local hospital to be treated.
The driver going the wrong way on the road was taken into custody by Houston Police based on the belief of drunk driving. The area where the accident occurred was closed for roughly half an hour while police investigated.

Texas Instruments Houston plant to close

The Houston DUI defense lawyers of Johnson, Johnson & Baer, P.C. have just learned that Texas Instruments announced their plans on Monday to shut down their Houston, Texas plant within the next 18 months. This closing, accompanied by the closing of the Hiji, Japan plant has been decided in order to save the company money in the coming years.
Along with the plant closings there will be roughly 1,000 employees getting laid off as well. According to Texas Instruments, these new modifications will save the company approximately $100 million annually. After the news of the layoffs and closings hit the public, shares for the company rose by $1.11, which is more than 3 percent.

Katy probationary officer fired after car accident kills two

A 22-year-old probationary officer in Katy has been fired after the truck he owned was responsible for the death of two people.
The officer and his 23-year-old friend were intoxicated when the friend decided to drive the officer’s truck. They were traveling on Interstate 10 when they swerved across lanes and crashed directly into a parked car. A 48-year-old woman and her 12-year-old son had pulled their car over in order to fix a flat tire.
The woman was outside of the car when the truck struck. The car became engulfed in flames and both the woman and her son were killed at the scene.The driver of the truck has been charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter and the owner of the truck was stripped of his title.

Houston schools and homes lose power due to thunderstorms

The Houston DUI defense lawyers of Johnson, Johnson & Baer, P.C. would like to inform people about the power outages that are taking place in the Houston area. These outages are a direct result of the major thunderstorms that have hit the city throughout the day on Monday.
Approximately 19,600 Houston residents are said to be without power. The Houston Independent School District also reported that five of their schools have lost power as well. The city is anticipating flooding as the rain continues and they are preparing for evacuations.
The thunderstorms have subsided but only after they created hail and potential tornadoes in the city.

No-refusal weekend considered successful in Houston counties

No-refusal weekend in Houston counties saw great success over New Year’s weekend in respect to the number of DWI arrests.
The no-refusal program is funded by the Texas Department of Transportation and has been active throughout 2011 in Montgomery and Harris County. This year in Montgomery County, there were 35 drunk driving arrests that resulted in mandatory blood samples. Harris County saw 40 DWI arrests and six of those were required to give blood samples.
New Year’s weekend qualifies as a zero-tolerance weekend due to it’s high probability of drunk driving accidents.

Study shows teen drinking and driving to be highest NYE weekend

Approximately 2,300 high school juniors and seniors were surveyed by Liberty Mutual and the student organization, Students Against Destructive Decisions, in regards to drinking and driving.
The study shows that 49 percent of the participants believed that New Year’s Eve weekend was the most dangerous time to drink and drive. Ironically, the same participants stated that they most often drove drunk over New Year’s Eve weekend compared to several other weekends including prom night and graduation night.
The teens also noted that they would be more likely to not drink and drive if they were asked not to by one of their friends or passengers in their vehicle.

City of Houston partners with Elves & More

The Houston non-profit, Elves & More, has teamed up with the City of Houston to provide new bicycles and safety gear to deserving students in the Houston area.
This year, a total of 8,000 bicycles were distributed to the children, who were eligible for a bike if they had improved their school grades over the year. The City of Houston Mayors’ Citizens’ Assistance Office was able to raise $25,000 in donations to buy bicycle helmets.
Bike safety will be taught by the Houston Police Department to ensure safety while using the new equipment. There were 36 schools that benefited from the fundraising efforts of Elves & More and their numerous participating sponsors, including the City of Houston.

Six-year-old dies in probable DWI accident

Eight people were traveling in a car Saturday night in North Houston when the car hit a wall and flipped. A six-year-old girl was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.
The 25-year-old female driver is being charged with intoxication manslaughter in the accident and is said to be the victim’s aunt. She was driving west on North Loop when she crossed over several lanes and hit a concrete barrier, flipping her vehicle upside down.
Five of the passengers were taken to the hospital and their current conditions are unknown. At least one of those passengers was another young child. North Loop was closed for four hours while police tended to the accident.

15-year prison sentence for intoxication manslaughter charge

A Conroe honor student who attended Sam Houston State University will serve 15 years in prison for an intoxication manslaughter charge.
The 25-year-old female drank at a Chili’s restaurant in San Antonio and then decided to drive home. Her blood-alcohol level was nearly four times the legal limit when she drove on the wrong side of a road and struck an oncoming car head on.
A woman and her two sons were in the car that was hit. The 53-year-old music teacher and mother of two died at the scene of the accident. She was the sole caregiver for her husband who suffered from multiple sclerosis as well as her two sons.
The drunk driver made an open no-contest plea and has enrolled in AA and is seeking help. The judge in her case determined that she acted recklessly and made the improper decision when she decided to drive inebriated. She will have to serve at least half of her 15-year sentence before she will be eligible for parole.

Houston toy drive benefits underprivileged children

The Houston dessert shop, Ooh La La, will be hosting a toy drive from now until December 15 that will benefit underprivileged children in the Houston area this holiday season.
The “Sweetening the Lives of Others” toy drive has been an annual occurrence of the bakery, which will distribute the toys through the Toys for Tots program. People of the community are asked to bring a toy to the store that is not wrapped with a value of $10 or more. Any toy gun paraphernalia will not be taken at the drive.
Individuals who give a toy during the toy drive will receive a free jumbo cupcake from Ooh La La. The toys can be dropped off at either of the dessert shop’s locations during their operating hours.
