State senator proposes stricter drunk driving penalties
Posted on April 20th, 2010
State Senator Jane Nelson has proposed a new bill that would mean drivers convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol more than once permanently forfeit their driver’s license. Current state law only allows for a maximum of two years suspension.
The recent killing of a 33-year-old mother and her 13-year-old daughter by a drunk driver with three prior DWI convictions prompted moral outrage and the proposal of this bill.
Some anti-drunk driving advocates are unsure if this proposal is really the best way to address the problem of repeat drunk driving offenders on the roads. According to Mothers Against Drunk Drivers spokesman Bill Lewis, most drunk drivers who cause accidents are first time offenders. Targeting a small slice of repeat offenders will not prevent these accidents.
Nelson’s staff intends to present the bill at the next legislative session.

Two drivers suspected of driving under the influence were involved in a Fort Worth accident early Saturday morning wherein two children were killed and four adults critically injured.
Police report that a red Dodge pickup truck was headed north on the service road of Highway 287 around 12:30 a.m. in southeast Forth Worth when it collided with a green Ford Taurus sedan at the Mitchell Boulevard intersection.
There were five people riding in the sedan; a four-year-old girl was thrown through the windshield and died soon thereafter at Cook Children’s Medical center. The girl’s two-year-old sister was pronounced dead at the scene, and it was determined that she had been improperly secured in a car seat. Police say that the mother of the children, another man in the car, and the man driving the car were all seriously injured. The driver of the pickup truck was also critically injured.
Both drivers are accused of driving under the influence. The pickup driver faces three counts of intoxication assault and two of intoxication manslaughter, while the driver of the sedan faces charges of driving while intoxicated with a minor in the car.
