The mayor of Brownsville has been charged with drunken driving after being pulled over by police for driving recklessly.

He was arrested but has paid a $3,500 personal bond and is out on bail. The mayor has told officials that this traffic stop does not mean that he is guilty of the offense and that he would like everyone to give him the same treatment a citizen gets when going through the legal system.

Police report that Friday night a drunk driver crashed into a family of seven, injuring them all.

The incident occurred at the intersection of 249 and North Houston Bammel when the driver of a white Chevy pickup truck ran a red light and struck the family’s vehicle.

“We have witnesses that say that vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic,” Sgt. S. Wolverton of Harris County Sheriff’s Office said. “We have a couple of witnesses who say they had to swerve to avoid being struck by that vehicle.”

According to one witness, who narrowly avoided the truck’s erratic movements prior to the accident, the driver was “drunk as a skunk.”

Four occupants of the vehicle struck were children, one as young as 3 months old.

They were all taken to local hospiatls, some with more serious injuries than others. All are expected to make a full recovery. The driver of the truck was not injured.

Police found open, still-cold beer cans in the truck. The driver was uninjured, and faces charges of intoxication assault.

A 19-year-old Houston man is facing potential charges of intoxication manslaughter following an early Sunday morning drunk driving crash that resulted in the death of a 4-month-old girl.

The terrible accident occured around 4 a.m. in the 700 block of Coral when the man ran a stop sign, drove up the driveway of a nearby home and smashed through a wall of the residence. He then fled the scene of the crime before police found him at his home in the 7500 block of Satsuma.

A 4-month-old baby girl was rushed to the hospital and put on life support, but died Monday. Her death will allow prosecutors to escalate charges from intoxication assault to intoxication manslaughter. They are also expected to charge him with failure to stop and render aid involving serious bodily injury. Both charges carry a maximum sentence of ten years.
